Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered this message in several conversations following England's loss in the second Ashes series versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had let his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, following the opener scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, he said his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of play – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term future in the side, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his modest returns against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise from the outside. There is no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
