Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike against an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of access tunnels down to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary commented. "Including them were a great many British personnel stationed over the holidays. This operation, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military executed what it called a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
